October 23, 2006, Budapest: a photo sequence of one protester in traditional dress — vest, red shirt, and hat — caught up in the clashes marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution. Photos: Lukács Csaba (Magyar Nemzet).
Riot police turned water cannons loaded with green dye on the crowd to mark demonstrators for later identification.
Behind him, a giant “lyukas zászló” — the Hungarian tricolor with the Soviet-era coat of arms cut out, the defining flag of 1956 — hangs over the square, fifty years on.
He is seen again further along the march, arm-in-arm with fellow demonstrators — some masked against tear gas and camera identification — as riot police, many without visible identification badges, moved in to break up the crowd.
He was struck and left bleeding from a head wound.
