In December 1996, a historical essay on the Treaty of Trianon by Bernd Posselt, a German Member of the European Parliament, was circulated on the Hungarian Lobby mailing list. Posselt’s piece argued that Trianon’s redrawing of borders ignored the principle of self-determination, drew a parallel to the international community’s similar mistakes in the 1991 Paris conference decisions on the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia (which he linked to the subsequent conflicts in Bosnia, Croatia, and Chechnya), and suggested that the European Parliament and Commission were better positioned than military intervention to mediate and gradually correct the unresolved nationality disputes left by the post-WWI settlement.
