This weekend’s environmental demonstration in Washington, in front of the Romanian Embassy (1607 23rd Street NW, at Sheridan Circle) from 11 AM to 2 PM, is organized by the “NGO Coalition To Save Our Rivers.” It follows four separate spills from Romanian mining operations within a two-month span: the January 30, 2000 Aurul cyanide spill, the March 10 Baia Borsa dam break, a second Baia Borsa release on March 14, and a fourth spill the following week.

The demonstration’s goals: focus attention on the need for international regulations and safety enforcement as multinational mining firms expand operations globally; highlight the responsibility of institutions like the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Court, and the European Union to help post-Communist states like Romania adopt acceptable environmental safety standards; and press for funding to restore the environment of the damaged downstream states.
