The Hungarian American List (HAL), also known as the "Hungary" list, was created to serve the community with information of Magyar (Hungarian) interest. It provides a general medium for those interested in expressing, sharing, and exchanging views, ideas, and feelings about Magyars (Hungarians) and Magyar (Hungarian) culture. Posting to the list about Magyar (Hungarian) events in the United States was strongly encouraged. The group was a mixed-language Magyar/English group, open to anyone regardless of race, ethnic origin, religion, or political belief. The list’s purpose was to promote understanding between Magyars while emphasizing our common cultural heritage and making Hungarian culture better known to non-Hungarians.

HAL was originally hosted by the UMCP Hungarian American Association at the University of Maryland, College Park, and its home page linked onward to HunOR (Hungarian Online Resources) — the direct predecessor of this site.
