p. 6 After most of Hungary had converted to Protestantism, the Habsburg
Lobkovitz declared: "I will make Hungary first a beggar, then Catholic,
and after this, German."

p. 7 "Much later in time Austrian-born Hitler was a direct heir to the
sneering hatred for Hungarians, which lingered long in many quarters of
Vienna. In the first edition of his book, "Mein Kampf," Htler expressed
his opinion, that the great historical sin of the Habsburgs was their
failure to exterminate the Hungarians. Hitler was unfair to the Habsburgs.
They had done their worst. They had efficiently thinned out the resisting
Hungarian elite, but they could not afford the wholesale genocide
advocated by Hitler. The Hungarian farmer was needed to produce food for
Vienna. Recognizing this, the wise counselors of the Habsburg rulers had
also discovered the truth later codified by Orwell: "He who controls the
past, controls the future. He who controls the present, controls the
past." Consequently the scientific apparatus patronized by Vienna started
to give Hungarians a new concept of their own history: a history aimed at
producing humility and obedient servants."

In northern Africa, one can still find fair-skinned people with Hungarian
names. These are the descendants of Protestant clergy who had been sold by
the Habsburgs as galley slaves during the "counter-Reformation." As you
would expect, Transylvania was the part of Hungary that resisted most
fiercely and successfully, on the battlefield under Bocskai, and by
recognizing freedoms of conscience as God-given in the Diets of Torda.
