Unveiling of Görgey statue.
On May 21 1998 a “reconstituted” equestrian statue of famed (and controversial) General ArturGörgey was unveiled by district mayor (and historian) Tamás Katona on Buda’s castle hill (BudaiVár).Dedication by Catholic and Protestant military chaplains. The statue is in the “FehérváriRondella”, i.e. the spot where the Hungarian Honvéd pierced the Austrian defenses in May 1849.There was an earlier Görgey bronze statue unveiled in 1935 at another Castle Hill location,sculpted by György Vastagh. During WW II a blast knocked it off its base. Removed cca 1950,the bronze salvaged and reconstituted as a Stalin statue. A reduced replica remained and served asa model for this new version; sculptor: László Marton. It’s overall height is 8 meters and it is atopa rose-colored base of Swedish granite. (The base had supported a Lenin statue, now redeployed).
The main base inscription:” Görgey Artur 1818-1916″. On the sides the list of chief Görgey battlesites: the mining towns of North Hungary, Hatvan, Tápiobicske, Isaszeg, Vác, Nagysalló ,Komárom, Buda , Ács, Miskolc.
