Discrimination of Reformed Church

Background:
The organizers of the World Congress of Reformed Churches have
obtained a completely legal contract to use the sports arena in that city
during their International Congress. Recently the Romanian government,
through a local official (prefect), has forbidden its use and ILLEGALLY
cancelled the contract.

What to do:
Please write President Iliescu a letter protesting against this
discrimination of the Reformed Church and the Hungarian minority.
Ask all your friends to do the same. Feel free to use the attached
sample letter.

RE: Protest Against Religious Discrimination

Dear Mr. President,

Last week, Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu has just assured the American
administration and lawmakers, that Romania will respect its own laws and the
international standards of behavior, and now the news is received of an other
illegal act in Oradea (Nagyvarad).

According to the reports, the organizers of the World Congress of Reformed
Churches have obtained a completely legal contract to use the sports arena in
that city during their International Congress and now, your government,
through a local official (prefect), has forbidden its use and ILLEGALLY
cancelled the contract.

I respectfully ask you, to overrule this illegal act, and instruct the
prefect to respect the freedom of religion and assembly of your citizens just
as much as respecting the elementary rules of governmental non-interference
in business contracts. I am looking forward to hearing of your overruling of
the local official, who’s goal appears to be to discriminate against the
Hungarian national community and who’s methods were clearly illegal.
