Kalotaszegi Dance Workshop: Sandor Roman, Berkeley CA, 1/30/99
Don't miss this workshop and tanchaz if you are in the Bay Area this coming weekend! Balkan Folk Traditions will sponsor a workshop of Hungarian dance taught by Roman Sandor, a master teacher from Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, January 30, 1999 from 12:00 noon to 5:30 pm. The workshop will be held at the Finnish Brotherhood Hall, 1970 Chestnut Street in Berkeley. Registration will be from 11:45 am to 12:00 noon. Admission is $16. Roman Sandor is a well known dancer and choreographer in Hungary and has toured throughout Europe as well as in Africa, Asia, and North America. He has made several trips to the Bay Area to teach and choreograph. The dances he will be teaching are Hungarian partner dances from Kalotaszeg, Transylvania, actually within the borders of Romania. These dances have often been compared to American swing dance because of their intricate handing figures and improvisational nature in which the man leads the woman. No experience with Hungarian dancing is necessary to attend this workshop, and it is not necessary to bring a partner, as partners will rotate (change) frequently. Following the workshop, at 8:00 pm, Danubius Central European Ensemble will play for a traditional Hungarian music and dance party called a tanchaz. For newcomers, dances will be taught throughout the evening. Admission is $12. All ages are welcome and no partner or previous Hungarian dance experience is necessary.
