Background:
The village of Nagykaposi has been informed, that they must pull down
the memorial, which they just completed, to honor the 1100th
anniversary of Hungary’s founding. The village of Lelesz has been
fined 200,000 krowns ($7,000) for not having destroyed yet a similar
memorial, which they built from public contributions.
What to do:
Please protest such barbaric acts, by writing to the President of
Slovakia, Michal Kovac and by sending copies of our letters to the
Human Rights Commissioner of EU, Carl Bildt (carl.bildt@moderat.se),
President Clinton and the media. Feel free to use the attached
letter written. President Kovac does only have a fax address. For the
case that you do not have a fax access I have attached the e-mails of
the embassies.

RE: Stop the Pull-Down of Hungarian Memorials
Dear Mr. President,
recently I learned that two villages (Lelesz and Nagykaposi) in South
Slovakia must pull down the memorials, which the ethnic Hungarian
inhabitants of these villages raised to honor the 1100th anniversary
of Hungary`s founding. Furthermore the village Lelesz has been fined
200.000,- crowns (7000 US-$) for not having destroyed its memorial
yet.
These acts do neither correspond to European standards nor to the
spirit of the Hungarian-Slovak Basic Treaty. The consequence of this
obvious violation of respected minority rights can cause severe
damage for the reputation of Slovakia.
Therefore I respectfully ask you Mr. President, to raise your voice against the
pull-down of the memorials.
