The Croatian Invasion (September1848)

The Croatian main force under “Bán”Jellaçiç about 50 thousand strong, entered Hungary near the confluence of the Mura and Dráva rivers, moving Northeast just East of the Balaton. (dashed line) A second force (crossing the Dráva further East) under Roth (dash dot)attempted to meet them, but was thwarted by small honvéd forces and eventually surrendered. The main Hungarian force under Móga stalked the Croats just to their West (solid line) and gave battle at Pákozd, near the lake of Velence. A turning point, the battle of Pákozd was relatively light on casualties. Thoroughly beaten, Jellaçiç asked for an armistice (3 days) and upon its expiration headed West with his remnants into Austria, where he was promised new orders and reinforcements. (He got the orders, but no reinforcements).
