Steindl Imre (1839–1902)

Imre Steindl (October 29, 1839 – August 31, 1902) was, alongside Miklós Ybl, one of the two most significant architects working in Hungary at the turn of the 20th century. An associate professor and corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, he is remembered above all as the designer of the Hungarian Parliament Building (Országház) on the Danube bank in Budapest.

Built between 1885 and 1904 in the neo-Gothic style and completed just after Steindl’s death, the Parliament Building became — and remains — the defining symbol of Budapest’s skyline and of Hungarian statehood itself. Steindl won the international design competition for the building in 1883, besting several other major architects of the era, and devoted the rest of his career to its construction.
