Balaton the largest shallow lake of middle Europe is threatening by the „dry out” effect not by chance and not due to the „green house effect“ at all.
The data opened the door of the “dry out” effect: 1.2 billion cubic meter of water was let out of the bed — during the period of 1999-2000 — artificially with intense via the Sió channel (the link between the Lake Balaton and the Danube) -in order to gain land for real estate development. This forced official intervention of the Authority was not stopped neither later. Some drier years were coming in 2001-2002 and the water level of Balaton was only 23 cm (instead of prescribed 100-110 cm), related to the official-given 0 point.
Of course the very low level of the Lake-water is creating the problems continuously. When there was enough water the self-reputation was working. The natural waves of the Lake covered the lake-bottom by the nice-healthy sand of Balaton. This surface of the Balaton was one of the beauties of the Lake. It is blocked due to the low level of the water even the muddy-sennal islands were created in the Lake and the people had to cross this muddy part before getting the water of the Lake.
The number of tourists is decreasing year by year and the travel agents are complaining about their destroyed budget and the are right!
But the real reason is covered! The damage of this beautiful Lake Balaton is caused even built up by the Lobby of Water Conservancy for gaining more money, financial benefit for some private investors.
This group of „investors” is referring to the “Law of rehabilitation” of the Balaton (The 2000-th CXII law). This law was accepted in 2000 by the Parliament, but it is anti-constitutional in given paragraphs (16. § (1)) concerning the setting out the „legal coastline”. The Constitutional Court ruled this in 1996. Because of that some environmental associations applied to the Constitutional Court again.
These investors want to build hotels, water-sport-centers along the newly created 235 km long coast. They plan more than 20 thousand sailing boats and about 300 yachts clubs around the lake (every 0.5 km a landing-stage, or yachts club), what is unbearable for a shallow lake, like Balaton (average depths 2.5- 3 meters). With assistance of the state they will create the concrete coast, thus filling up the several hundred-hectare, gained from Balaton Lake. They will destroy that territory where today the lake Balaton has its short water, reeds, plants, turtles, water-snakes, frogs, fishes…
Against this aggressive intervention steps the State unfortunately without required firmness. Even the rigorous environmental rules don’t deter the higher authority from the unconceivable, irresponsible building up such a flat see, as Balaton. There is totally harmful, that with recon of financial assistance of EU, these implements are devoted to mutilation of Balaton through the building up of a countryside important coastal sector.
The arguments of those, who will protect the nature, decease against of financial interests of short-term profits of investors. From this reason ask some environmental associations help from Luxembourg Court to point out the unlawfulness of this project, and an international help: we request the revision of the designation of promised implements, from independent experts. We are in search of support in the interests of surviving ability of Balaton.
