Count Henryk Dembinski, a graduate of the Vienna Engineering Academy, had supported the Polish Grand Duchy created by Napoleon, who promoted him after the Battle of Smolensk. Decorated after the Battle of Leipzig with the Cross of the Legion of Honor, he joined the Polish revolution in 1831. Upon its defeat he went into exile and was recruited by Count László Teleki (Kossuth’s delegate in Paris) to join the Hungarian cause.
