The ÜSZTÜRÜ Ensemble was founded in 1992 by young Hungarian musicians while attending university in Kolozsvár. They were born in Transylvania and had close connections to the communities where Hungarian folk music was still a living tradition. They witnessed first hand how authentic, traditional folk music, played on acoustic instruments, has disappeared from village life, having been displaced by electronic instruments and Western pop music. The members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ were fortunate to learn and play with the greatest masters of Transylvanian music: Sándor Fodor [Neti] and Ferenc Árus from Kalotaszeg; Kodoba Béla and his family from Magyarpalatka, István Ádám [Icsán] from Szék; István Jámbor [Domnezu] and Ferenc Mezei [Csángálo] from Szászcsávás. Some of them, alas, have passed away. Many years of playing with these folk artists and studying, collecting their music makes the members of the ÜSZTÜRÜ special bearers of Transylvanian Hungarian music. They are dedicated to assuring the continued survival of a folk art form, which can rarely be found even in its indigenous surroundings. The Ensemble is also at home in performing all Hungarian folk musical dialects from the Austrian border to the Eastern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains.

Aman Folk Ensemble of Los Angeles

In response to the query about the Aman Folk Ensemble of Los Angeles, theirHungarian material is of a veryhigh quality because two Allami dancers, Szabo Istvan “Kovacs” (former artistic director of Karpatok) and Toth Tibor (formerly of Cleveland, Ohio) have overseen Aman’s Hungarian material in thepast two years.Kovacs is now co-director with his partner, Rosina Didyk, who is also superb in Hungarian styling. Theorchestra is one of the best in North America and was shared with the Karpatok Dance Ensemble. Aman is nowregrouping and I am not certain what current repertoire is but last season included a fantastic Gypsy numberand a Szekelyfoldi choreography. Csárdás Hungarian Dancers, Austin, TX

Csárdás Hungarian Dancers is a Hungarian performing and social dance group in Austin, Texas, that has been active for over 20 years. Our primary goal is to have fun dancing, but we also perform occasionally at localfestivals or other events with the hope of introducing Hungarian music and dance to the community at large. We periodically have workshops — in 1996-97 Sándor & Böske Timár and Zoltán Nagy were able to come to Austin; and in previous years Sándor Román and Sára Feri have visited. Some groupmembers have gone tocamps such as Barátság, the Válaszút camp in Transylvania and the east coast symposium. And, we periodically travel to other events — in 1996 eleven folks went to Louisville to see Muzsikás and Márta Sebestyén , and in 1994 six of us from Austin and two from Houston went to Arizona to see the State Folk Ensemble perform. We have an aspiring local Hungarian dance band called Kolorash. They occasionally play for our performancesand táncházak. But as they are not always available, we often resort to our sizeable collection of tapes and CDs. The performing group of Csárdás Hungarian Dancers is also connected to a student group at the University of Texas. So, some of our members are students, and we are always hoping they will stay in Austin after they graduate. We would be happy to share our fun, enthusiasm, and knowledge with other Hungarian dancers in the world. You’re welcome to come dance with us anytime!

CSURDÖNGÖLO FOLK DANCE ENSEMBLE – CSURDÖNGÖLO NÉPTÁNC EGYÜTTES

The CSURDÖNGÖLO FOLK DANCE ENSEMBLE is rooted in the NY-NJ Hungarian – American community, primarily in New Brunswick – a „hotbed, ” as they call it, for Hungarian-Americans. Primarily made of sons and daughters of emmigrated Hungarians, Csurdöngölo has evolved into one of America’s leading ethnic dance ensembles. The group’s name comes from Hungarian for barn stomper and the custom which called upon villagers to stamp down the earthen floor of a newly built barn. What better way to have some fun while working as a community. Don’t stomp on it. Dance on it! The energetic style of that stomping is symbolic of the vigor with which these artists carry on the joyful celebrations of their heritage. The Tulipan Hungarian Dancers (Tulipan Nepi Tancegyuttes) was founded in 1984 by Susanna Toth-Blackburn, as part of the Ottawa Hungarian School. First the children, then their parents and older siblings began to dance; as these children grew up, teachers and choeographers had to be imported to keep up with their growing knowledge base and skills. First, Ilona Kovacs (St. Catherine’s), then Kalman Dreisziger (Montreal), and later Bela Gazdag (Szekesfehervar), Peter Ertl (Honved Egyuttes, Budapest), Dobi Gabor and Hugi (Kodaly, Toronto), Peter Levai and Zsuzsa Kiss (Budapest), Zoltan Farkas and Toth Ildiko (Batyu and Fecske)(Budapest), and lately, for extended periods over three years, Szucs Gabor and Urban Maria (Jaszbereny), who have almost become our permanent choreographers. They will be here again next week, to teach in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal for five weeks, and to serve as the evaluating committee for PONTOZO 2000 (May 19-22) here in Ottawa. The high point of the troupe’s development thus far was the period from 1994-1998: performances in the Corel Centre, the organization of the Great Hungarian Picnic, circa 1900, for Canada Day, 1995 and at Canoe ’97 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where we represented Hungary at the Hungarian Embassy’s request, as the festival’s flag was handed over to the Hungarian committee, in preparation for the next games, held in Szeged the following year. One of our dancers accompanied the World-Wide Dance for Peace troupe to Shanghai to perform Kalotaszegi legenyes at the International Children’s Festival in 1994. Bori Kontes, a graduate of our children’s group and star of the adult troupe, is presently in demand to teach “Hungarian” to folk dance groups in Quebec. Despite the relatively small size of our city, it is the capital of Canada, and therefore the site of many major festivals; TULIPAN has performed in the Parliament Buildings several times, during the Canada Day show on Parliament Hill, and in the National Arts Centre (not the main stage!) We are presently at the stage of building the troupe again, after the departure of several long-time members to university, marriage, etc. We number 20 in the preforming troupe, and approximately 10 in each of the two children’s groups (named “Eszterlanc” and “Gyongyvirag”. The senior ladies’ ensemble is also 10 strong, calling itself “Nefelejts.” For information, contact President, Christina Magyar 42 Cleadon Dr Nepean, ON K2H 5P3; CANADA (613) 828-1197 E-mail: c_magyar@yahoo.com or tulipanottawa@hotmail.com , or call Zsuzsa at (613) 233-6791.

Vadkelet Ensemble, Toronto, Canada

The Vadkelet Hungarian folk music ensemble was founded by Peter Horvath who is also currently a member of the Kodaly dance ensemble in Toronto, Canada. The group has metamorphised several times in its short existence, more specifically its name has gone through several identity crisies. In the beginning the moniker, Mokuska was used to designate not only the name of the group but also its fragile insecure identity. Peter and by now Mateus Etynkowsky the bracsas, feeling more bold, especially after having several personal lessons with Netti Sanyi Bacsi decided to have a contest to see who could come up with a more fitting name for the now more well established group. It was determined by Peter that Gabor Dobi’s submission of Vastaghuros fit the bill nicely. As a prize Gabor was given an Okros CD and it seemed the group was well on its way of earned recognition. Gabor not realizing that the distinction of winning the contest also brought the shocking responsi! bility of becoming the groups first bassist, decided to have a palinka to forget about life’s more pressing matters. The group practiced and practiced and it seemed for a while at least, that we would never get through the first bar of the Szeki negyes, when a mysterious knock at our door changed everything and you guessed it our name. Istvan Szapudi browsing the web found the vastaghuros ensemble’s page and decided to give us a ring. It turned out that Istvan played the violin and really wanted to play with the group. Practicing one day, after a few bottles of wine we decided that vastaghuros wasn’t appropriate since according to Istvan, “we don’t even play too many vastaghuros tunes.” This presented us with an obvious delimma, since all the good names like Duvo, Muzsikas, Szaszka etc. were all taken. Well we set about brainstorming, and came up with some very interesting ideas – Hatokor, Bacchus, Kukullo. We almost settled on Hatokor, not realizing there were only fou! r of us in the ensemble, until Istvan related a story to us about how his friend was relegated from teaching at a University in England to teaching at a high school in Szabolcs County which he described was like being sent to the Wild East. And that’s how it stuck ever since. Our repertoire is growing and we hope to play tanchaz occasions soon as well as performances perhaps with the Kodaly Ensemble. Our first gig was at the Cifra Camp in Niagara Falls where we played during teaching sessions and tanchaz. The group also sounds a lot better now that Gabor figured out it’s better to bow with the hair part of the bow and not the wood. Bye for now and please contact us through our website. kodaly1960@hotmail.com or (416) 773-1746
