Kossuth, Mississippi
With a population of about 250 and situated in the Northeast corner of the State of Mississippi, Southwest of the city of Corinth, “Kossuth MS” was so named in 1853 to honor Lajos Kossuth. Its previous name, “New Hope” was thus officially changed. Presumably then Governor Henry Foote may have encouraged the name change. Foote, previously a United States senator, had introduced the Senate resolution inviting Kossuth to visit the USA. The vessel bringing Kossuth Westward from Turkey was- perhaps not coincidentally- the “steamfrigate” USS Mississippi. In 1996, reaffirming its founding principles, March 15 was promulgated the town’s Hungarian national freedom and independence day.
