(Tisztelt HL tarsaim.

3) A Kerry kampány részéről Mark Brzezinski levelét mellékelem (2).

Bush and Kerry questioned

BÉLA G Lipták, founder of the Hungarian Lobby based in Stamford, US, has written to both US President George W Bush and his Democrat challenger Senator John Kerry, asking them to outlines their positions on Hungarian minority rights.

In his letter to the two leaders Lipták says, "As of yet, our lobby has not endorsed any presidential candidate and this letter is written to help us reach our decision on whom to support.

"As you probably know, there are some 1.5 million Hungarian-Americans in the United States.

They tend to be conservative and reside mostly in the northeast, Ohio and Florida.

"What you probably do not know is that Hungarians are the largest minority of Europe and that Hungarian-Americans are willing to cross party lines to support this minority.

"The Hungarian minorities of Europe became a minority, not because they emigrated to another country, but because the borders have been redrawn around them. They became foreigners without leaving their thousand years old towns and villages.

"The thousand years old kingdom of Hungary was dismembered in 1920 (mostly by the French and against the objections of President Wilson), because a large and powerful Central European nation prevented the evolution of Western European hegemony over Europe.

"Hungary did nothing to deserve this; she was the one who mortally wounded Communism in 1956, she never had any colonies, never had any slaves, did not practice segregation, was the first to declare the freedom of religion and defended Europe for a thousand years.

"We, American-Hungarians are very interested to learn, if your foreign policy would include the protection of the collective human rights of national minorities, their right to local self-government and dual citizenship?

"I would be very grateful if you could advise me about your position on these issues."

As The Budapest Sun was going to press to press, Lipták told us "We have, as yet, not heard from the Republican campaign, but I am sure we will.

"From the Kerry campaign however, Mark Brzezinski wrote, indicating that he has passed on our letter to the campaign's ethnic coordinator."

Lipták noted that support has come from various other groups, and has been greatly welcomed.

"We also received a letter from the 10 million-sized and well organized Polish-American Lobby, indicating that they received some 20 letters (asking them to support us) and they will do so," he said.

"I also heard from the Albanians and Ukranians, saying basically the same thing. It was interesting to hear that the American-Ukranians also support autonomy for the Hungarians in Kárpátalja.

I am, personally, completely apolitical. Here I speak more about the democrats than the republicans, because they responded faster. My goal is to wake up the American-Hungarians to realize that they have political power and it is their moral duty to use it," he added.

The Hungarian Lobby plans to publish its decision as to which candidate it will support on October 23 in The New York Times.

Lipták says the lobby will base its decision on nothing else but the foreign policy position of the candidates, and their support for the collective human rights on national minorities.

Dear Mark,

I have asked László Böjtös to participate in your round table discussion and to represent the Hungarian Lobby's position, that is attached below.
