The events of October 6, 1849
By order of an Austrian imperial military court, Prime Minister Batthyány was executed
in Pest. His sentence based largely on trumped-up charges, e.g., promoting the
October 3, 1848 Vienna revolt, and thus causing the death of Lambert and Latour. He attempts
to take his own life, but is stopped to make room for the firing squad, so it
can be deemed the cause of death. Haynau was furious: he had ordered Batthyány
hanged, as firing squad considered too honorable a way to die.
In Arad Hungary, (Arad is in Rumania today) thirteen military officers executed : 12 generals, one colonel.
