Az Európai Ombudsman válasza Tanító Bélának (2003. szeptember 4.)

“Thank you for your letter of 23 July 2003, in which you request me, as Ombudsman of the European Union, to propose to the President of the European Parliament a resolution concerning the Benes decrees of 1945. I would like to inform you that the role of European Ombudsman is to inquire and report into possible maladministration in the activities of the institutions and bodies of the European Community… The matters you raise are therefore outside my mandate as European Ombudsman. You may wish to contact the President of the European Parliament directly.”

Válasz Verheugen biztos hivatalától

Esther Kando Odescalchi, Ph.D. megosztotta a Verheugen biztos nevében Ulrich Weins által írt válaszlevél egy részletét:

“European history in the 20th century has been full of turmoil, injustice and human suffering. The victory for freedom which the courageous peoples of the then socialist countries achieved in 1989 provides a unique opportunity to bring the Eastern and Central part of the continent into the fold of the European interaction process. It is my personal conviction that it was wise and responsible not to allow this historic opportunity to be jeopardized by grievances stemming from the troubled past. Coming to terms with history cannot be made a legal or political condition for EU membership. If it ever had been, few current members might have qualified at the time.”

Egy HL tag megjegyzése

Egy másik tag, aki szintén teljes választ kapott Verheugen hivatalától, megosztotta észrevételét a Lobbival: úgy érzi, az EU tisztviselői makacsul ragaszkodnak ahhoz az állásponthoz, hogy a kisebbségek elleni megkülönböztetés — főleg szlovák részről — nem áll fenn, miközben a gyakorlatban igenis léteznek visszaélések. Szerinte a Magyarok Világszövetségének kellene élen járnia annak bizonyításában, hogy a Beneš-törvények szellemi hatálya a mai napig érvényesül.
