PENDING BENEFIT LAW

Miklós Duray: ’the position of Hungarian minorities is not better’.

It seems the leaders of the European Union are not interested in the ethnic and minority problems of the acceding countries. According to many Hungarian politicians beyond the borders the present Hungarian government wishes to make the benefit law empty. István Stefka has made an interview about these problems with Miklós Duray, managing deputy chairman of the Hungarian Coalition Party in Slovakia.

Miklós Duray finds it curious that the discussion of the amendment of the benefit law takes such a long time. In his opinion the protection of human rights covers the notions represented by the terms of the benefit law which is necessary even after the EU-accession which will not affect the minority problems. Mr Duray sees the intention of the Hungarian government to make the benefit law gradually empty and meaningless while in Slovakia they want to return to the Basic Treaty between the two countries and they do not want to permit anything going beyond that. The anti-Hungarian sentiment prevails in Slovakia though the benefit law is in harmony with Slovakian laws and the Hungarian government does not convene the Hungarian Permanent Conference and the Hungarian certificates are not accepted even in Hungary – this is all the result of the pending benefit law.
