Background:
Last week, the House and Senate voted to give President
Clinton the ability to grant permanent MFN trade status to Romania.
Before the House took up the matter, human rights activists in the
legislature were assured by Romania’s Foreign Minister Melanescu that
MFN would not become an issue in that country’s national election
and that discrimination on religiuos or ethnis basis will stop.
One day after the house vote, president Iliescu brought MFN into
the election campaign. Furthermore just a few days ago the Romanian
government illegally cancelled a contract to use the sports arena of
Oradea (Nagyvarad) with the Reformed Church.

What to do:
If you are a US citizen, please write to your two senators and ask
them to urge the President not to sign Romania’s MFN until after the
elections in Romania. Send a copy to all the other senators. If you
live outside the USA, you can send your letter to the whole Senate.
Feel free to use the attached sample letter. The letter is
applicable for Hungarian-Americans as well as non-American citizens.
Please MAKE A CHAIN LETTER out of it, by sending a copy to your
personal mailing list, and by asking your friends to NOT ONLY WRITE
TO THEIR SENATORS, but also send it on to their friends.
