Tom Lantos, a magyar származású amerikai képviselő és a képviselőház külügyi bizottságának elnöke 2008. február 11-én, 80 éves korában hunyt el. A Magyar Lobbi február 16-i körlevele nekrológot, Maximilian Teleki washingtoni búcsúlevelét és Lipták Béla Joe Biden szenátornak szánt helyesbítési felhívását közölte. Tom Lantos, 1928–2008

Az Associated Press nekrológja felidézte, hogy Lantos Budapesten született zsidó családban, kétszer megszökött egy náci munkaszolgálati táborból, majd Raoul Wallenberg védelme alatt részt vett az ellenállásban. Édesanyja és családjának nagy része a holokauszt áldozata lett.

Az Egyesült Államokba kerülve közgazdaságtant tanult és tanított, majd 1980-ban választották először kongresszusi képviselővé. 1983-ban társalapítója volt a Congressional Human Rights Caucusnak, később a képviselőház külügyi bizottságát vezette. A nekrológ emberi jogi fellépését emelte ki Darfurtól Burmáig, valamint azt, hogy rendszeresen szót emelt a szomszédos országokban élő magyar kisebbségek jogaiért.

George W. Bush elnök, Condoleezza Rice külügyminiszter, Nancy Pelosi házelnök, Ban Ki-moon ENSZ-főtitkár, Elie Wiesel és számos amerikai, magyar és nemzetközi közéleti szereplő méltatta. A Fehér Ház és a Capitolium zászlóit félárbócra eresztették.

Lipták Béla felhívása Joe Biden kijelentésének helyesbítéséért

A körlevél szerint Biden a kongresszusi búcsúztatón azt kérdezte, miért szerette Lantos Magyarországot, ha magyarok ölték meg a családját. Lipták arra kérte a Magyar Lobbi résztvevőit, hogy saját szavaikkal kérjenek nyilvános helyesbítést. Mintalevelében hangsúlyozta, hogy Magyarországot 1944-ben a német hadsereg megszállta, Lantos családja pedig a náci üldözésben pusztult el.

Dear Senator Biden,

I would like to thank you for your farewell speech in which you so warmly remembered Congressman Tom Lantos. I would also like to respond to the question attributed to you about why Congressman Lantos loved Hungary when Hungarians had killed his family.

At the time Congressman Lantos’s family was murdered, Hungary was occupied by Nazi Germany. I believe your wording was unintended, and I respectfully ask you to issue a formal correction.

Congressman Lantos knew that one need not exchange one loyalty for another, but can carry several loyalties together. He was a devoted American and served his chosen country well. He remained devoted to Jewish life and to the memory of the Holocaust. He was also Hungarian, defended Hungary’s good name, and worked for the rights of oppressed Hungarian minorities in the Danube basin. For these reasons, the Hungarian-American community would be grateful for a correction.

Thank you, Tom Lantos

Rep. Tom Lantos was an unfailing and principled advocate for human rights. He personified the highest principles of statesmanship by using his office and influence for good: to assist persecuted peoples throughout the world.

Throughout the years, Mr. Lantos and his family members attended various events sponsored by my organization. He often spoke with great pride of his Hungarian identity; occasionally, he even recited patriotic Hungarian poetry remembered from his childhood. He also possessed wit, charm and toughness that could win over the staunchest adversary.

To Hungarian-Americans, Mr. Lantos was a true ally in Washington. He shared our heritage, and he shared our concern for ethnic Hungarians who live as minorities throughout the Carpathian Basin. Throughout his years in office, he took the lead and helped our cause in numerous congressional initiatives to call attention to the plight of Hungarian minorities—the most urgent cause uniting Hungarian-Americans today. Mr. Lantos never wavered in his commitment to the entire Hungarian nation.

As an advocate for our concerns and as a personal friend, he is irreplaceable.

On behalf of our members, our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Annette, and with the entire Lantos family.
