Hungarian engineer builds novel wind turbine tower

Hungarian engineer Viktor Gyorgyi has built a revolutionary wind turbine tower lacking external blades on his own estate in western Hungary's Felcsut, Nepszabadsag daily reported on Monday.

The 29- metre-high structure, with its turbine and generator on the ground rather than high up in the air, is designed to eliminate disadvantages of horizontal axis devices which must take far greater stresses, the inventor told the paper.

The engineer said that the tall column – which looks a bit like a octagonal high-rise office block without the windows – was much easier to assemble the ultra-light aluminium components joined by nuts and bolts without any welding.

Its greatest merit, Gyorgyi said, is the generator's ability to harness both light breezes and storm-force winds. He said that with wind speeds of 116 km/hour, the device could produce 210 kilowatts of energy. He added that in case of higher generators the output would increase exponentially, and a 120-metre-high structure could yield as much as 5 megawatts.

The inventor is planning to reveal theoretical details, his calculations and measurements at an international conference later this year.
