Thanks for your excellent analysis of the probable voting of the Jewish and Muslim blocks in the upcoming presidential election. You might be interested to learn that new voting trends are also emerging among Hungarian-Americans.

Next Sunday, the Hungarian Lobby is going to place the following advertisement in the newspapers of Cleveland and Sarasota, where large numbers of Hungarians live. Please find below both the text of that advertisement and the letter we sent to both candidates:

Dear President Bush, Dear Senator Kerry,

I am writing to you as a member of the Hungarian Lobby of the United States.

As of yet, our lobby has not endorsed any presidential candidate. Therefore, your response to this letter will help us in reaching a decision on that. As you probably know, there are some 1.5 million Hungarian-Americans in the United States. They tend to be conservative and they reside mostly in the Northeast, Ohio and Florida.

Hungarians are the largest minority of Europe. The Hungarian-Americans are more than willing to cross party lines, if that is what it takes to assure the survival of this minority. As you know, Hungarians in Europe became a minority, not because they emigrated to other countries, but because the borders been redrawn around them. They became foreigner without leaving their thousand years old towns and villages.

The kingdom of Hungary was dismembered in 1920 (mostly because of French pressure and against the objections of President Wilson), because having a large and powerful Central European nation would have prevented Western Europe's hegemony over Europe. Hungary did nothing to deserve this. Hungarians defended Europe for a thousand years, never had any colonies, never had any slaves, did not practice segregation, were the first to declare the freedom of religion and served all mankind by mortally wounding Communism in 1956.

We, American-Hungarians thank both of you for your promises to eliminate the visa requirements for Hungarian turists. We also thank Senator Kerry for his October 22 announcement that he will support the rights of national minorities in Central Europe.

Yet, before endorsing either of you, we would like to learn, if your foreign policy would include the support of the rights of national minorities to local autonomy, self-government and to dual citizenship? I would be very grateful if you could advise me about your position on these issues.
