Dear Peter,
I can not sign your declaration of support for Senator Obama, because the Hungarian Lobby includes Republicans, Democrats and Independents. The Lobby itself is above party politics and supports that political leader who best represents the interests of all Hungarian-Americans.
In this election, we will support that candidate who states that his administration will stand up for the collective human rights of all national minorities on the globe, because the human rights of all individuals include the right to maintain their cultural heritage.
I will announce the answer of the candidate(s) at the commemoration of the Hungarian Revolution in New Brunswick on the 26th of October where I will be the speaker (invitation below).
I was advised by Orson Swindle of the McCain and Mark Brzezinski of the Obama campaigns that they have passed on the question of the Hungarian Lobby to the Senators and right now we are awaiting their answers.
Best regards, Béla Lipták

Hungary is is chains and we can only be true to her, if we never betray – among ourselves os anywhere – the ideals and never give up the dreams, which the Hungarian heroes gave their lives for." Obama-Biden Campaign Welcomes Hungarian American
National Leadership Committee
The Obama-Biden campaign today officially welcomed the formation of a dozen European and Mediterranean American National Leadership groups, including the Hungarian American National Leadership Committee.
"In these uncertain and tough times, Hungarian Americans, like all Americans, are looking for a President that provides steady leadership and puts the middle class first," said Rep. Peter Ujvagi of the Hungarian American Leadership Committee. "Barack Obama will be that President – a President who, by his example, demonstrates that achieving the American dream is still possible, and who, with his policies, will make sure that it can be a reality for all Americans."
“Hungarian Americans see an Obama-Biden Administration representing our needs in Washington. We see an ally against the special interest and a government that provides a fair taxing system.” said Maximilian Teleki of the Hungarian American Leadership Committee. “We are looking for a President who will end the costly military war in Iraq, and a leader who will defeat the “true terrorists” who attacked the United States on September 11th. Barack Obama will be that President”

Obama-Biden Campaign Welcomes European and Mediterranean American National Leadership Committees
Chicago, IL – The Obama-Biden campaign today welcomed the formation of a dozen European and Mediterranean American National Leadership Committees. These committees, comprised of prominent leaders from across the country — Governors, Senators, Members of Congress, diplomats, labor leaders and others — showcase the continued and growing support for Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
“I’m honored to receive the support of these European and Mediterranean Americans. As immigrants and the descendants of immigrants, European and Mediterranean Americans have a deep commitment to their families and their communities. And like all Americans, they want an economy that creates jobs and restores opportunity, a quality education for their children, affordable and accessible health care – the very promise that their children’s tomorrows will be better than their yesterdays. I am running for President to restore that promise and put the American Dream within reach for them and for all Americans,” said Senator Barack Obama.
Over 200 Americans from 12 different European or Mediterranean backgrounds have come together to endorse Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden. They have formed 12 different national leadership committees, which are:
Albanian Americans
Arab Americans
Armenian Americans
Croatian Americans
Greek Americans
Hungarian Americans
Irish Americans
Italian Americans
Polish Americans
Serb Americans
Slovenian Americans
Ukrainian Americans

RE: Position an the collective rights of all national minorities.
Dear Senator McCain,
One of the issues that the Hungarian Americans are concerned about is the future of one of Europe's largest minorities, that of the 3 million or so Hungarians. These people became minorities without leaving their towns or villages, because the borders been redrawn around them at the time when the Kingdom of Hungary was dismembered in 1920. Even during Soviet occupation, their collective rights to cultural and economic self government were better guaranteed by the puppet governments of Hungary's neighbors than they are today. In many cases, 19 years after the fall of Communism, the church properties, universities, cultural institutions of these minorities have still not been returned, their language and other rights have still not been guaranteed.
We do not ask you Senator McCain to express your views about the second class citizenship of the Hungarian minorities of Europe. What we are asking you is to state the general principles which would guide your administration concerning the collective rights of national minorities anywhere in the world. We believe that standing up for these basic human rights and principles would not only be consistent with America's highest traditions, but would also gain the respect of the world for the United States.
We at the Hungarian Lobby will distribute your answer among all the friends of the Hungarian American community and will make sure that all ethnic groups know, that if they vote for you, their minorities, no matter where they live in the world, will have a friend in the White House and that your foreign policy will support the collective rights of all national minorities to maintain their identity through cultural and economic self rule.
Respectfully,
